I Want My Eagles Job back- Former Coach, Samson Siasia

Former Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, has confirmed speculations that he is interested in staging a come back as the team’s gaffer, a job Stephen Keshi is currently still hanging on to in interim capacity.

Speaking during a media parley with Friends of Football Foundation in Abuja yesterday, the coach stated that though it is the NFF executive committee that will determine who leads the Eagles, there was nothing wrong in his indicating interest to take the job.

He insisted that since coaching is all about hiring and firing, there was no big deal in his eyeing Keshi’s job, more so when Keshi was the one he lost the job to in 2012.

He stressed that the Eagles job is up for grabs since Keshi’s contract had expired.

His words: “I have read several reports concerning my taking over from Keshi, but I don’t know what is going on because the NFF has to get itself together before anybody can talk anything about Eagles coaching job.

“Let us just hope that the NFF election will be a successful one after that the issue of who takes charge of Eagles will come up,” he said.

On the possibility of his interest affecting his relationship with Keshi, Siasia replied: “I am not taking his job because he does not have any job in the first place at the moment because his contract has since expired. The way I see it, it will now be left for whoever emerges new NFF president and his board members to decide who they want to take over the Super Eagles.

“If they decide to appoint me, I will gladly accept the job because he also took the job away from me. One point I want to make here is that I don’t have any problem with Keshi. He remains my friend. Since he took my job, we still talk, hug and relate very well,” he insisted.

The former Dream Team chief coach equally spoke on the chances of Super Eagles qualifying for the 2015 Morocco Africa Nations Cup, warning that once we lose the game against Sudan we would have to wait until 2017 to appear in the tournament.

“Everything is hanging in the balance and if we don’t win the next game, we should forget about the ticket.” he noted.

Nigeria has 64 million Adult illiterates

The National Mass Education Commission (NMEC) says Nigeria’s adult illiterate population stands at 64 million and described the figure as worrisome.

The Chairman of the Governing Board of the commission, Dr Esther Udehi, made this known on Monday in Awka during a courtesy call on the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Nkem Okeke.

The visit was part of the activities lined up to mark the International Literacy Day (ILD) in the state.

Udehi said Nigeria’ s dream of attaining the Education For All (EFA) Goal 2015 would become elusive except something was urgently done to reverse the trend.

“It is a shame that in the 21st century we should be having such a number of illiterates. It is thing of concern to everyone.”

She said the ILD celebration was, therefore, an opportunity for the commission to drum up support for adult literacy.

2014-09-30-07-51-50The chairman tasked states to ensure that the 774 local government areas were well equipped and empowered to be the “hearts of advocacy” for literacy.

She noted that the laudable policies of government at all levels could not be achieved with such a large population of illiterates in the country.

“We all know that an illiterate is a danger, not only to himself, but to the society at large,” Udehi said.

In his response, Okeke said that the Anambra Government was conscious of the enormous challenges confronting the education sector, especially in terms of achieving the EFA Goal.

Okeke said the government was committed to ensuring that Anambra became one of the states with the largest population of educated people.

The deputy governor, therefore, pledged the state’s support for the non-formal education sector to achieve this set goal.

19-year-old boy impregnates mother while testing love charm

Residents of Asaba, Delta State are yet to recover from the shock of how a 19-year-old Godwin (not real name) allegedly impregnated his mother while testing his love charm.

According to report, the boy, famously known as Ekenem, was said to have gone to a native doctor, who allegedly prepared a love charm for him to use on his mother and one of the matrons in the college where he is a boarding student.

It was gathered that the husband of the woman, who has been away for some time outside his Port Harcourt operational base, denied being responsible for the pregnancy during interrogation.

But the victim, the suspect’s mother, while speaking to journalists said, “I did not know how it all happened, but all I can say is that a young man who looked like my son suddenly found his way into my room at the wee hours and I was speechless”, adding that the whole exercise had remained inexplicable.

Speaking at the police headquarters to journalists, the suspect said, “I am deeply sorry for all that has happened, I did not mean to do this. I saw myself falling in love with her after the love charm prepared for me. I have to confess because I know by so doing, God will touch her mind and I know she will forgive me. I suddenly found that I was making love to mum when I thought the charm will not work, and upon the revelation, I threatened to kill her and the matter was reported to the police”, he said.

DSP Celestina Kalu, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, who confirmed the report, disclosed that the boy had since been arrested over threat to life.

Man allegedly tried to commit suicide inside Synagogue Church to prove T.B Joshua is not Fake

2014-09-30-07-27-31The spokesman of Emmanuel TV, the media outfit of the Synagogue Church of all Nations, Ken Emeakayi, claims a young man attempted to commit suicide during service yesterday, Sunday September 28th.

While speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily today, Emeakayi disclosed that the man tried to jump down from the gallery of the church which would have immediately killed him upon landing.

According to him, the young man said he wanted to show that he believed prophet T.B Joshua.

He argued that if the man had succeeded in the suicide attempt, the story would have been reported differently.

Clearing the air on the misinterpretation on the collapsed building, Emeakayi also said what happened on September 12th was a controlled demolition.

“We are investigating the incident for the world to know what actually happened. When you look at the clip, you will see that it was not just the aircraft hovering. At the point of the incident, there was an explosion. It is possible they were either dropped or planted and the aircraft will have to come and detonate it. The persons in the building said that the noise they heard suggested that it was an explosion. Those involved in the act may not have been aware of the security cameras. With modern technologies, explosive devices could be detonated without a loud noise. There were about four explosives that were detonated in the building from the much the CCTv could capture and because we know that there would be fragments from the explosive, we are calling for an investigation” he quipped

Shine your eyes when next you buy Fuel, See Dirty tricks petrol stations and Attendants play on customers

fuel

Mrs. Bisola Ayeni, a businesswoman in her early 40s confidently left her house at Egbeda (Lagos) with an almost empty tank heading for Ikeja. The red light of the fuel indicator was blinking nonstop but Ayeni knew the quantity of fuel in her tank would take her to the next available filling station where she had hoped to fill up her tank.

Indeed, as she got to the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ayeni drove into the filling station and told the attendant to fill her car with N5,000 worth of fuel while she rummaged her handbag to bring out the money as well as pick a call. That was her undoing.

Ayeni would tell our correspondent that she didn’t bother to look at the pump while the sale was on because she didn’t envisage any foul act, besides she knew the level a N5,000 worth of fuel would rise to on her fuel gauge. Ayeni only managed a quick glance at the meter and when she saw that it was reading, she relaxed and enjoyed her discussion on the phone.

She said, “When I finished, I looked at the pump and I saw N5,000 on the price column, I paid him and drove away. I expected the light indicating low fuel to go off and the indicator to rise, but it didn’t happen.

“Even if the rise in the fuel indicator would be gradual, I expected a major shift. Lo and behold, the light never went off and the indicator never rose.

“Oh my God, I was confused and very angry, so I turned back, while praying that the car wouldn’t run out of fuel. By the time I got to the petrol station, I was fuming.”

Ayeni said she had almost slapped the attendant who attended to her having shouted on him when the station manager came out.

“On hearing what happened, the manager gave the sales boy a resounding slap, apologised to me and ordered him to sell the fuel again, and I heard him saying the N5,000 would be deducted from his salary. We both stood by him while he sold the fuel, the gauge rose even before I left the station, which means he cheated me earlier. I still wouldn’t know how he did it,” she said.

Ayeni’s experience is common among vehicle owners, who had at one time or the other thought they had bought fuel but later found out they either bought nothing or were short-changed in terms of the quantity. A cross section of vehicle owners who spoke to our correspondent alleged that they had noticed same at one time or the other but said that there was nothing they could do since they really could not establish any foul play.

In case you once bought fuel from a filling station and it seemed like nothing was added to your fuel tank after you have left, or you felt what was sold to you wasn’t commensurate with what you paid for or expected, you may have been cheated under your close watch even with your eyes wide open.

Saturday PUNCH had a revealing chat with fuel attendants of some popular filling stations in Lagos and they explained how they make quick but huge cash from unsuspecting customers.

One of them who identified himself simply as Owolabi John, said there are many ways fuel attendants cheat customers who have come to buy fuel, which many people are not aware of.

Devouring a massive plate of hot and spicy pepper soup and a bottle of chilled beer our correspondent bought for him, John readily exposed all the tricks on how they make money.

By the way, John earns N10,000 as a fuel attendant. He wants to pursue a university education. There is no other help from anywhere else, as such John admitted leaving no stone unturned to take advantage of gullible customers to make some money from what he described as “the customers’ carelessness.”

“Ideally, when we resume, we take the reading on the meter on the fuel dispenser, which we call the opening meter, and when we close, we take the reading, which we also call the closing meter. Then, we multiply the difference in the readings by the cost per litre, which is the amount we deliver to the manager. If there is any surplus, it belongs to the attendant, and if there is loss, the attendant will look for money to make it up. If the shortage is a lot of money, the manager may allow that the money be deducted from the person’s salary if the person is not sacked,” he explained.

However, that surplus money may not have been a miracle or manna from heaven; it could simply be a product of manipulation by the attendants.

According to John, there are different types of fuel dispensers, such as Marathon, Sanki, Eagle Star, etc, and each machine has its peculiar way of being adjusted. “On the keyboard of some of them, where we enter the number of litres or amount, which is either in front or on the side, there is usually a button labelled ‘Recall, TIM/CAL’ or any other label, depending on the machine. The essence of the button is to enable the attendant to see the past sales. If you want to see your last ten sales, you just press Recall, then the number you want to see etc, depending on the number you want, and it shows you the amount. Beyond seeing our past sales, we use it to make money.

“If I sell N2,000 worth of fuel to a customer, and the next customer also wants to buy N2,000. If I observe that the second customer Isn’t paying attention, I will sell some quantity, maybe N1,500 and press Stop or Cancel, depending on the machine press Recall, 1, then press Ok. With that, N2,000 will appear on the screen and that is what the customer will see on the meter, believing the sale is complete. This can be done in less than one second. That is one of the ways, and at the close of business I remove mine which is the excess of the actual litre sales.

“Imagine if I do that for about ten customers in a day, with varying gain from each case, which depends largely on the amount of fuel the customer is buying and how sensitive the person is. I could make up to N10, 000 in one day,” he explained.

According to him, attendants could go to the extent of writing out some past sales on a paper where they can easily have a glance to know which number to recall when a customer is distracted or looks away, since many people prefer to buy based on price and not litre.

“When customers come, we observe them and see if they are tired or we try to distract them, sometimes with the help of our colleagues by engaging them in a chat or doing things that could easily distract them. As soon as they look away, if the seller has made an appreciable sale, he/she would have mastered or checked his paper to see the last time he sold that particular amount, as soon as it is possible, he will press it, and press OK. Before the customer looks back, the sale will appear complete,” John explained.

John’s revelation explained one of the ways Ayeni might have been cheated. Another fuel attendant, who simply identified himself as Owode Kabir, told our correspondent that the use of Recall or TIM button is the easiest way to make quick money because the customers would think the machine was fast, so they wouldn’t always suspect anything, even though some come back to complain.

However, Kabir stressed that not all attendants are involved in the act, but that many of them do it as long as there is opportunity and that in some cases, they settle the station manager at the close of work if they are able to make some money, which they do everyday anyway.

But ‘Recall or TIM/CAL’ button is not the only way to make money from customers, Kabir would tell our correspondent. There is yet another way!

Even though many people know that when the nozzle is hanged on the pump, the readings revert to zero, he said they (fuel attendants) have also found a way to manoeuvre it to make some money.

“What we do is to gently place the nozzle, such that it won’t click to rub off the old sales and revert to zero, so, we fake it, which means the dispenser is still running, so if anyone comes, we simply continue from where we stop and that is why sometimes it seems like we are rushing the customers. It is easier when the last sale is a small quantity.

“Even though the use of the Recall or TIM/CAL’ button on some of these machines is the easiest method, faking the nozzle is another viable way to make money.

“If the previous sale is about N200 maybe by a Keke NAPEP and Okada rider, or even commercial buses (danfo) drivers, because they are the ones who buy fuel in bits, we will gently place the nozzle, and naturally, when you see that we remove the nozzle from the hanger, that is, from the engine, you believe that it started from zero. However, it is not always the case,” he said.

Kabir was quick to add that some station managers or managements know about their tricks but that once they are caught or reported by a customer, such person could be sacked. He added that attendants usually sell in all cases but such sales might not start from zero or could be recalled to a previous sale that had the same amount, which would be an incomplete sale for the customer.

“Sometimes we could gain up to N1,000 from one sale, it depends on the quantity that the consumer wants, and those that are caught are usually the greedy ones,” he noted.

He added that in filling stations where their dispensers do not have Recall or TIM/CAL only the last sale could be recalled, hence, once the last sale is not the same with the current sale, faking the hanging of the nozzle might be the only way to make money through such pump.

Station owners and managers also dupe customers

A female attendant with a major oil marketer company in Lagos Island, Seun Jegede, told our correspondent how station managers and filling station owners also cheat their customers.

She alleged that most filling stations alter their meters to under-dispense fuel at the detriment of customers, which is a known phenomenon among consumers. Even though this could be a product of greed and inadequate regulation, she said they also do that to make up for some loss they might have incurred during sales.

“Based on experience, I can tell you that almost all filling stations, including the ones being run by government, adjust their meters and what they do is to settle the officials from the Department of Petroleum Resources if or when they come for inspection.

“No attendant can alter the meter on his own, except the manager sanctions it because it involves the engineer changing the panel and doing some mechanical readjustment. That is why many filling stations that alter their meters have to bribe their way through because the engineers are not always there, except the manager recommends a trusted attendant to be trained so as to put the pumps back to normal if DPR comes.

“The adjustment is easier with the marathon machine because it has a key in front of the meter. This allows for quick readjustment of the meter so as to scale through the due diligence check by the DPR, which could be once in six months,” Jegede explained.

She added that the decision to alter the meter could either come from the owner of the station or the station manager in connivance with the engineer, adding that whoever orders the adjustment takes the money made from the unsold quantity.

Station attendants also cheat their employers

According to John, not only customers are open to this fraud, even the management that the attendants work for are not immune to their fraudulent acts, through what he called ‘no reading’. In this case only the price meter reads while the litre reading does not move. He said this could be a product of frequent repairs of the pump or any other mechanical fault, which could make it malfunction.

“When there is ‘no reading’ on the litre menu, and the management is not aware, there is no way the management will know the actual number of litres that have been sold.

“What we do in such cases is to sell on the basis of amount only and we sometimes negotiate with the customer for settlement because we can sell more to make money. I can even call someone from home to come and buy and keep for me, before the management finds out that the litre is not reading.

“Even though the ‘no reading’ issue rarely happens, it becomes a free for all if it happens to the diesel or kerosene pump that usually has no attendant attached to it. With that, tracing who sells what quantity may be difficult, even though an attendant must be smart to avoid being penalised.

“Another form of ‘no reading’ is when some attendants, especially those attached to diesel or kerosene that have lesser patronage compared to petrol, gently press the nozzle (just like a one-touch press) that may not read on the meter whereas some fuel will still come out. It can also happen when they finish selling and instead of hanging the nozzle, they place it inside the keg for the little quantity to drip into their kegs. It may appear little, but over a long time, the gentle one-touch press and the leftovers become a large quantity. That is why you see some attendants having kegs beside them,” John explained.

The attendants further explained that they make more money when there is epileptic power supply which force people to buy fuel in kegs. “When there is no power supply and people struggle or force your nozzle in their kegs, many of them don’t care about starting from zero, which is a plus for us,” he said.

They however said station attendants find it difficult to cheat if the customer comes out of the vehicle to stay with them, adding that those who sit in their vehicles can easily be distracted or shortchanged.

A Director in DPR, Mr. George Osahon, had strongly advised in a television programme recently that it was better for vehicle owners to buy specific amount of fuel rather than using number of litres as a yardstick.

“When you go to a modern filling station and you ask for N5,000 worth of fuel, they simply punch a pad and when it’s complete it stops by itself, and it is better to stand by the seller or keep a close watch from your car if you choose to sit in the car.

“The reason the same worth of fuel would vary in quantity at different filling stations is because some under-dispense. Nobody will ever over-dispense, people will either dispense normally or under-dispense, so if you see such differential, it is very necessary for you to call the attention of the DPR to it,” he had said.

Osahon had also said people should stop using statements like ‘fill-up the tank’ not minding how much fuel was inside their tank or the quantity coming into it, saying there is a lot of wastage in that, which is not necessary.

However, while some filling station attendants who spoke to our correspondent denied the fraud allegations, a few others admitted that some attendants do it and that it depends on the circumstance and the type of pump, as pointed out by John.

A cross section of station managers who spoke to our correspondent also dissociated their filling stations from those who cheat their customers, adding that none of their staff would survive such an attempt.

Mr. Adebola Durojaiye, who is a manager of a filling station in Ikeja, said, “People say all filling stations under-dispense but that is not true. One good way to identify those who do it is that they don’t have good patronage because whether we like it or not, customers know the good and bad stations, so, the generalisation is wrong.”

The Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Ejigbo Satellite, Mr. Ajayi Adebayo, said recently that any member of the association found indulging in sharp practices would have his/her office sealed off alongside other sanctions, while urging members to be transparent and objective in their business transactions.

In a telephone conversation with our correspondent, the Executive Secretary, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Obafemi Olawore, said no member of the association could be involved in under-dispensing or fiddling with the pump, adding that anyone with proof of such malpractice against any MOMAN member should feel free to contact the association to complain.

“I am not aware that any MOMAN member engages in under-dispensing. However, I cannot swear an oath or beat my chest and say there is no such thing by those that we contracted to run the stations, that is, the dealers. I am not saying they do it, but anyone with proof that it happens should contact us and we will take immediate action,” Olawore added.

DPR Spokesperson, Ms. Dorothy Bassey, said the agency was doing its best to check the fraudulent practices by some filling stations through its random inspection, while describing the bribe allegations against DPR officials as untrue.

“I am confirming to you that it is not true that officials of DPR collect bribe, what kind of money are they going to pay DPR staff? That is why we shut down stations once we have any indication that they carry out any malpractice.

“It happens but not as rampant as people make it look because nobody is a fool or wants to be cheated. That is why we do a lot of public engagement for people to watch out.

“We may not be 100 per cent, but certainly, we are working to ensure that everybody is happy. We have operation offices nationwide where people can go to complain,” Bassey said.

Meanwhile, a report culled from dailyfinance.com says filling up the tank may be another way to lose money and fuel, because when the pump clicks off automatically, no additional fuel enters the tank. “Instead, fuel is likely being diverted through the pump’s vapour recovery system and back into the station’s tank, which means you are paying for gas that you are not getting.

“More importantly, the car needs space in its tank for fuel vapours to expand. Overfilling can force gas into the car’s carbon filter, leading to poor performance, reduced mileage or costly repairs. So, the next time you want to buy fuel, don’t top off your tank, it’s good for your car and even better for your wallet,” the report said.

I hope you gained something? Now this is the time to share with others.

Election will be Tough In 2015, We Want to Take Over – Buhari

2014-09-26-08-54-53

Ex-Military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari has predicted that next year’s general elections will be tough and urged all APC members to collect their voters’ card and hold on to them.

He called on Nigerians not to vote for treasury looters in 2015, saying provision of free amenities is possible. He rolled out the party’s package for Nigerians; improved infrastructure, water, electricity and improved education system for Nigerians, under a new government run by the APC.

In Buhari’s words: “The next five months will be very tough, because we want to take over the government, from Councillorship to Presidency.

“Next election is going to be different and next year is going to be tough because APC is ready for change in Nigeria. We will stop corruption; no more will anybody put government money into private pockets.”

Meanwhile, the All Progressives congress, APC, has said “Nigeria is terribly asleep and is having a serious nightmare,” and will continue to experience such as long as the ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, remained at the helms of affairs.

National Chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, who stated this at Lokoja Township Stadium, Kogi State, during the formal reception of Kogi PDP decampees into the party on Tuesday, said “PDP is giving Nigeria a bad dream.”

The former governor of Edo State, however, said there “is hope for Nigeria if Nigerians wake up fast and vote for APC which is becoming the fastest growing party in Nigeria, and has come to remedy the ills meted on the country.”

Addressing the crowd, he said, “APC is growing so fast. Many of you know I have been here three times in the past and I tell you this is the greatest crowd I have seen.

“The PDP is finished anyway. Have we forgotten the N20 billion? Have we forgotten the N225 million armoured tank? Can we forget the $9.3million? Can we forget Boko Haram? And, look at it here in Kogi State, look at the very stadium we are standing, where the government cannot fix its roofs.

“But, I want to tell you that as soon as APC comes into power, we will change all these for the better.”

Panic in Liberian Villages as Dead Ebola victims reportedly " rise from the dead"

Two female victims who passed on, after contracting the deadly Ebola virus, allegedly resurrected in one of the villages in Liberia today, UK Mirror reports.

The victims, both females in their 40s and 60s, died of the deadly virus in separate communities in Nimba County, Liberia.

But according to reports in a local newspaper, the women have been resurrected and are now walking among the living, causing panic and fear among locals.

The New Dawn Nimba County said the late Dorris Quoi of Hope Village Community and the second victim identified as Ma Kebeh, in her late 60s, were about to be taken for burial when they rose from the dead.

Ma Kebeh had been indoors for two nights without food and medication before her alleged death.

Nimba County has recently reported unusual news of Ebola cases, including one about a native doctor from the county, who claimed that he could cure infected victims, dying of the virus himself last week.

Since the Ebola outbreak in Nimba County, this is the first incident of dead victims resurrecting, the paper said

Why T.B Joshua Should be arrested and Prosecuted

It is time the authorities in Nigeria did the right thing and arrest Mr. Temitope Balogun Joshua, the self-styled General Overseer of The Synagogue, Church of All Nations. Here is why:

On Friday, September 12, 2014, a guest hostel located within the premises of Joshua’s sprawling church at Ikotun-Egbe, Lagos, collapsed. The most recent media reports put the death toll from the calamity at 115. So far, rescuers have pulled out more than a hundred survivors from the rubble. Because Joshua’s church has always drawn an international audience, the continental profile of the list of victims is hardly surprising. For instance, at least 84 South Africans have been confirmed dead. There are also Nigerians and citizens of other African (and possible non-African) countries among the dead.

Joshua has done everything humanly possible to cover up the truth about this tragedy. First, in the first three days after the incident, he illegally barred officials of the National Emergency Management Authority from accessing the site and rescuing survivors. Second, while this illegal interdiction was in effect, Joshua attempted to dictate the narrative and deflect possible culpability by blaming the incident on a mysterious “small plane” which had purportedly hovered above his church complex moments before the collapse. Claiming that he and not his church building was the target of the alleged attack, he even released an “exclusive” footage of the “strange” plane. Third, as public anger mounted in South Africa, Joshua declared the dead “martyrs of faith” and sought to change the subject by promising to “take his teachings” to the country every month for the foreseeable future. Fourth, an audio recording has just emerged of Joshua paying a gathering of journalists N50, 000 each in exchange for suppressing the truth and privileging his version of events. The recording, whose authenticity has not been challenged, was released by Nicholas Ibekwe, a correspondent with an online news medium who was present at the meeting.

Joshua obviously recognises that the version of events he is seeking to promote is implausible, hence his latest attempt to manipulate public opinion by inducing journalists.

He should not be allowed to get away with it. His entire conduct since the tragic news broke has been that of a man who feels that he is accountable to no one, and who is too preoccupied with his image as a “man of God” to worry about the many victims of this tragic incident, whether injured or dead. His attempts to somehow portray a collapse that most probably has to do with failure to comply with building regulations as a personal attack is an example of his self-promotion and is nothing short of callous.

Yet, if Joshua has comported himself as one above the law, it is precisely because the Nigerian state has offered him every licence. In this wise, neither President Goodluck Jonathan nor Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has covered himself in glory. The President’s visit to the scene of the collapse in which he commiserated with Joshua was painful to watch. Why would the Nigerian President visit and express solidarity with the leader of a church who should be a person of interest in an ongoing police investigation? And is this the same President who does not know the way to Chibok where over 200 schoolgirls were abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents? Whatever his motive, Jonathan strengthened Joshua’s arm, gave him the assurance of presidential protection, and threw police investigations in jeopardy. In the same vein, the cloak and dagger nature of the meeting between Governor Fashola and Joshua can only have comforted the latter. Nigerians deserve to know what transpired during their meeting, and whatever assurances, if any, Fashola gave Joshua. That said, Fashola is putting at risk his own hard-earned reputation for transparency and legality. Simply put, should visits have taken place, they should have been to the hospitals where the injured are being treated and the homes of the deceased. The site should have been barricaded by the relevant authorities—the police, town planning, etc.— to secure evidence, given that the presumption ought to be that even if it is not immediately clear that a crime has been committed, something definitely has been remiss in the entire tragedy. Getting to the root of the matter should be the only concern next to solicitations for the welfare of the survivors.

We cannot resurrect the dead – we leave that to Joshua, who claims to have such powers – but it is a duty we owe to their memory that the truth of this matter is not buried with them. Therefore, it is important that the police and other investigative agencies be given the necessary backing (both financial and moral) in order to carry out their duties. Joshua is a person of interest, not for his callousness, but for his cynical and persistent attempts to obliterate the truth and pervert the course of justice.

The police should arrest him. Today. At a minimum, he should be declared a person of interest regarding a crime scene and be invited for a “chat”.

Girl Freed by Boko Haram 4months Pregnant

The abducted “Chibok girl” released on Wednesday is “pregnant and mentally ill,” the National Chairman of Chibok Community Development Association, Dr. Pogu Bitrus, has told TheCable.

Earlier on Thursday, the police revealed that the 20-year-old girl was abandoned by suspected terrorists at Mubi in Adamawa State, from where she was picked up. It also confirmed that she was one of the female pupils of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, abducted in April by Boko Haram.

However, Bitrus said it was still uncertain if the girl was from Chibok because her name did not correspond with any of the names in the records of the girls that were captured by Boko Haram on April 14.

“I was speaking Kibaku to her, but she did not respond; she was incoherent. She may be having mental issues as a result of trauma,” he said.

Bitrus added that preliminary tests – still not definitive – indicated that the girl is pregnant.

He added, “When she was picked up, she was taken to a clinic, not a standard hospital, and tests were carried out on her.

“From the tests, it was said she is pregnant, but that is still in the speculative domain because a qualified medical doctor has not confirmed that she is pregnant.

“However, we are still trying to establish if really she is from Chibok, because from our sources, the last name of the released girl does not tally with the surname of the person bearing the first name of the released girl captured in our records and whose father is a carpenter at Chibok. So, we are still trying to work out every detail.”

Alleged release Story of Chibok Girls Untrue-Defense Minister

The spokesperson for the defence headquarters, Chris Olukolade, had told Premium Times that a yet unclear number of the girls had been freed and driven in two Toyota Hiace buses to the Maimalari Barracks, the headquarters of the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri. But less than 30 minutes after he spoke to us, Mr. Olukolade called back to say he was withdrawing his earlier statement.

He said he had been having difficulty establishing contact with his colleagues in Maiduguri and that he was no longer sure that the girls driven into the barracks were newly rescued.

Premium Times has also learnt that the girls driven into the Maimalari barracks were those who escaped earlier from the Boko Haram sect. The over 200 girls, mostly teenagers, were kidnapped from their secondary school in Chibok, Borno State, on April 14. With the military withdrawing its statement, it now does appear the girls are still in captivity.

'Her condition is so rare, it doesn't even have a NAME': Heartbreak of mother whose daughter suffers from uncontrollable vomiting and could die before she turns six

article-2761022-2173CE2D00000578-628_306x449

When Ava Galley, now four, from Cheshire, was born, her mother Nichola, 35, just had enough time to glimpse a pair of eyes and a tiny nose before her new daughter was whisked away by nurses.

By the time she next saw her daughter, she was in the midst of a tangle of wires as doctors frantically tried to work out what was wrong with the tiny baby and find a solution for her continual vomiting.

But more than four years on, Nichola and the doctors are no wiser and while they have managed to fix Ava's heart problems, precisely what sort of genetic disorder she suffers from remains unknown.
'It was like a punch in the stomach because we'd been given the all-clear from the amnio test,' says Nichola of the moment she discovered that her tiny baby wasn't the healthy daughter she had hoped for.
The pregnancy had been tortuous but we just thought she was going to be a very small baby. We were in the recovery room and laughing and joking when the doctor came in.

'The way the news was delivered to us… he walked into the room with a nurse and delivered it so abruptly - even the nurse was shocked.'

Convinced Ava wouldn't survive, doctors tried to prepare a devastated Nichola and her husband Paul for the worst but, much to the surprise of medics, the little girl clung on.

Initially, the biggest challenge was working out how to feed her: with Ava unable to suck and prone to vomiting whenever she was given milk.

'She was poorly and it turned out that every time they fed her, they were drowning her because the milk was going straight to the chest, straight to the lungs,' remembers Nichola.

'It was a good four months before we got her home and she has spent pretty much the first three years of her life were in hospital. This summer is the first that she hasn’t been in and out all the time.'

Despite her improving condition, Ava who suffers from microcephaly [an unusually small skull] in addition to the genetic disorder, is still unable to walk unaided, talk or feed herself.

She also continues to vomit uncontrollably, which means she regularly suffers from chest infections and needs a special bed, a feeding pump and round-the-clock care from her mother who has been forced to give up a promising career to care for her.

'She still vomits and I never know quite how much food to give her or whether her body is going to tolerate that feed,' explains Nichola

Exposing the CBN Boko Haram Sponsor

WHEN the Australian negotiator, Dr Stephen Davis, alleged that an unnamed top official of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was among the sponsors of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria many people took his words with a pinch of salt as he had also named a former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt Gen Azubuike Ihejirika, and former Governor Ali Modu

Nigeria’s Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has added his voice to this allegation, affirming that his own independent inquiries showed that the same individual is indeed culpable. He went on to say that the name of the person has been made available to the highest authority in the land.

The question on the lips of Nigerians is: who is this person? What is so special about him that he cannot even be named? Why can’t he be brought out for the public to see the person who has helped in sending thousands of Nigerians to their early graves while the nation is faced with the greatest threat to her unity since the Nigerian civil war nearly fifty years ago? Why has the CBN remained mute about this issue, since its name is being dragged to the mud? Why hasn’t the CBN seen it fit to tell Nigerians what it knows about this matter?

Happily, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), a social crusader organisation, has taken up the gauntlet and given the CBN a fourteen-day ultimatum, based on the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act. SERAP demands information about the persons involved in the money laundering and sponsorship of Boko Haram sect. A statement from the group said the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, is required to explain the exact nature of any such transactions.

We commend SERAP for wading into this matter clinging to the force of the FOIA. We are waiting patiently to see how the CBN under a new manager, Emefiele, will respond to this challenge. It will be a major metric for measuring the seriousness he attaches to his work and the need to keep the Bank clean of scandals.
We are greatly worried that the Presidency and the security agencies have chosen to keep the Nigerian public in the dark about the truth or otherwise of this individual’s involvement.

Although the very thought that an individual in the top echelon of Nigeria’s ultimate Bank and regulator of the financial system will become a bankroller of our enemy, yet it is only such a high level conspiracy that can make Boko Haram to grow into the monster it has become.
When this fellow is identified, tried and convicted, we will expect him to face the full wrath of the law.

Building Collapse: T.B Joshua Tried to Bribe US - TV Crew

2014-09-12-17-34-02

As Nigerian authorities investigate the cause of a building collapse in which 67 South Africans died in Lagos, a local author has described the Synagogue Church of all Nations and “Prophet” TB Joshua as one of Africa’s most influential men, who tried to bribe him during an interview. The collapse occurred on Friday when three extra stories were being added to the existing two of a guest house of the church compound, where visitors from abroad flock to stay.

So far, 80 people have been confirmed dead. In a shock announcement on Tuesday night, President Jacob Zuma disclosed that 67 South Africans had died in the tragedy. The Lagos Pentacostal church attracts a global following of Christians who believe Joshua is able to perform miracles including curing the ill and raising the dead from the grave. There are mounting calls for someone to be held responsible for the deaths and all eyes are now on Joshua.

But the charismatic preacher insists the collapse was the result of a planned attack on him. Jacques Pauw, author of Profit of Doom, an expose on Joshua’s church, says the preacher tried to bribe his entire television crew. “He obviously realised that it was going to be bad publicity for him and then he handed an envelope full of $100 notes to me and the sound person. We told him we couldn’t accept it and he said it was a gift from God.”

The regular influx of visitors from abroad for the church’s services, which can last up to a week, creates demand for accommodation that the church’s own guest house has been unable to meet, and often spills over into local hotels. Several African leaders have traveled to Nigeria to meet with spiritual “healer” Joshua, including former Malawian President Joyce Banda and Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema

12 Nigerian Soldiers sentenced to Death

2014-09-16-09-08-16
A military court sitting in Abuja on Monday found 13 out of the 18 soldiers standing trial for mutiny and other offences guilty.

Twelve of the convicted soldiers were sentenced to death, five were discharged and acquitted while the remaining one was jailed for 28 days with hard labour.

The soldiers had on May 14, 2014 fired shots at the General Officer Commanding the newly created 7 Division of Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Ahmed Mohammmed, in Maiduguri.

The act is viewed in the military as mutiny.

Those discharged are David Robert, Mohammed Sani, Iseh Ubong, Sebastine Gwaba and Naaman Samuel.

Jeremiah Echocho was sentenced to 28 days with hard labour.

Those who were sentenced to death are Jasper Braidolor, David Musa, Friday Onuh, Yusuf Shuaibu, Igonmu Emmanuel, Andrew Ugbede, Nurudeen Ahmed, Ifeanyi Alukagba, Alao Samuel, Amadi Chukwuma, Alan Linus, and Stephen Clement.

They were found guilty of criminal conspiracy, mutiny, attempt to commit murder (shooting of the vehicle of the GOC); insubordination to a particular order; insubordination and false accusation.

The President of the Court Martial, Maj. Gen. C.C. Okonkwo, said the 12 soldiers were found guilty of three of the most heinous charges bars.

The legal team of the convicts pleaded with the court martial to temper justice with mercy.

The team reeled out pathetic stories about the family backgrounds of the convicted servicemen.

One was said to be the only son of his octogenarian widowed mother.

Another is the father of a five-month-old baby.

The defence team argued that giving them maximum sentence would do more harm than good, adding that it would increase the agony of their dependants.

The attack on the GOC and his men reportedly occurred when they visited the cantonment.

The Maimalari Cantonment is the headquarters of 7 Division, the newest Division of the Nigerian Army.

Military sources said that soldiers at the cantonment had been complaining of insufficient ammunition, food and allowances prior to the GOC’s visit.

They were also reportedly unhappy and their morale was at its lowest ebb because there had not been troop rotation for a long time since their deployment to combat Boko Haram terrorists in the North- East.

“The GOC’s visit coincided with the arrival of the corpses of soldiers killed in an ambush in Chibok on the night of May 13, 2014.

“The apparently agitated soldiers, on sighting the corpses of their slain colleagues became hysteric. Some opened fire on the GOC, who was lucky to have escaped unhurt. However, the bullets hit and seriously injured some of his bodyguards, who also fled to safety,” the source said.

Man Electrocuted while Trying to Steal Cables

Residents of the Lonlo area along Iju- Ishaga Road, Lagos woke up on Monday to find a man who had been electrocuted by a transformer belonging to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.

2014-09-16-08-46-12

PUNCH Metro learnt that the man, whose names had yet to be known, was electrocuted while he was allegedly trying to remove transformer cables.

He was accused of being a vandal who wanted to steal some cables from the transformer.

A resident, who craved anonymity, told PUNCH Metro that the man might have come in the night to steal the cables.

She said, “The man is not known here. He might have sneaked to this area at night. It was when we woke up that we found him electrocuted on that spot. The power supply might have been restored while he was in the act. We are still waiting for the government officials to evacuate his body.”

While the crowds gathered at the scene, some policemen and officials of the electricity distribution company arrived and said the man wanted to steal an item from the transformer and was electrocuted in the process.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, could not be reached for comment.

Unbelievable! ! A woman with half her brain MISSING still managed to live almost a normal life

2014-09-13-06-14-18

A Chinese woman has lived to the age of 24 with part of her brain missing, before the extremely rare condition was detected.

Doctors at the Chinese PLA General Hospital of Jinan Military Area Command in the Shandong Province made the discovery when the woman visited medics complaining of nausea and dizziness.

Scans revealed the woman had been born with a cerebellum - the part of the brain responsible for posture, balance, motor learning like kicking a ball, and speech.

It is located at the base of the skull and contains around half the neurons - cells that transmit information - in the brain, and represents around 10 per cent of the brain's mass.
It emerged the woman had experienced problems, not learning to talk until she was six and failing to walk until she was seven.

While it is not unknown for a person to lose partial function of the cerebellum due to an injury or disease, completely lacking the region in the first place is extremely rare.

Physicians believe the woman is only the ninth known case of a living person suffering the condition cerebellar agenesis.
Doctors learned the woman had never played or jumped like other children her age, and is unable to walk steadily without support

Tests revealed she had no problem understanding words but living without a cerebellum meant she had difficulties with pronunciation.

Her voice trembles, her words are slurred and the doctors treating the 24-year-old described her voice tone as 'harsh'.

Specialists discovered the space where the cerebellum should be was empty.

Instead, the black space was filled with cerebrospinal fluid, which cushions the brain, providing defence against disease.
Doctors treated her with a dehydration treatment to remove some of the water pressure building up in her brain.

Mario Manto, who researches cerebellar disorders at the Free University of Brussels in Belgium, told the New Scientist: 'These rare cases are interesting to understand how the brain circuitry works and compensates for missing parts.'

The doctors looking after the patient, said they believe the normal cerebellar function may have been taken over by the cortex.

At a follow-up appointment four years later she was showing signs of doing well, it was reported in the journal Brain.

The woman married, and gave birth to a daughter with no neurological abnormalities.

While the majority of people born with the rare condition will die in infancy, the patient represents a new opportunity to study the effects of living without the cerebellum

Twist of Fate:Woman who bought stolen car for N25,000 arrested on day her son gets American Visa

The joy of Mrs. Caroline Akinlosotu knew no bound few days ago when her fourth child returned to their house in Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo State, smiling with a Nigerian passport that has two years American visa on it.

To the lucky Mrs. Akinlosotu, a widow with four sons, it was indeed a great joy since her last son will soon join two of his elder brothers who are presently living in the United States, and she would have three sons in America earning dollars to uplift the standard of living of the family.
But unfortunately, the joy was cut short few hours later when a team of anti-robbery squad from the state police command broke into the home of the Akinlosotus and abruptly put an end to their joyful mood.

The maternal head of the family, Caroline Akinlosotu and her third son were arrested for receiving both stolen vehicles and motorcycles from a fleeing suspect identified simply as “Labuta”.

The case against Mrs. Akinlosotu was that on the 3rd of September, 2014 at about 08:30hs, information had it that one Nissan Primera, black in colour, with registration number AGL-582 AV was abandoned by unknown persons somewhere around Ijimekun street, Ondo town, which was suspected to have been stolen by men of the underworld.

On the receipt of the information, a team of detectives from Yaba Division, Ondo were deployed on surveillance around the street where the vehicle was parked. At about 1500hs of same date, the said stolen vehicle was found dismantlement into parts for easy transportation to where it would be sold to customers by one Oyekachi Anya of No. 10 Ebido street, Ondo.
It was police investigation into the criminal act that further linked Mrs. Akinlosotu to the matter. It was said that she allegedly received both stolen vehicles and motorcycles. Others arrested in connection with the crime included one Gbemisola Adeyefa and Nike Bolodeoku.

Speaking with DailyPost when the suspects were paraded on Monday at the State Police command headquarters, along Igbatoro, Akure, Mrs. Akinlosotu said that her joy was now mixed with sorrow.

She confessed that she bought all the parts of the Nissan salon car from “Labuta” who is now at large, for N25,000.

Asked why she could buy a car for N25,000, Mrs. Akinlosotu said; “its God that punished me because I’m a cloth dealer and I don’t deal in cars. But, what pained me most in all these is that I have two of my sons who are currently living in America and I was arrested the day my last son got his traveling visa to the United States of America (U.S.A).”
About thirty other suspects were paraded by the crime-buster men of the command for various crimes, ranging from armed robbery, cult activities, internet fraud and drug related offenses.

Given the breakdown of activities and success story of crime bustling activities of men of the command in the last three weeks, the state Commissioner for police, Isaac Eke said the a huge result was made following a relentless and serious onslaught against criminals in the state.

According to Eke, 34 suspects were arrested at different parts of the state for various criminal offenses, with a major crackdown on cult groups and their criminal activities in the state.

The Commissioner said twenty suspected cultists were arrested by the police, including Bayo Akinfemiwa, a member of Eye cult and Chairman of Okada rider’s union in Ondo town.

Sad!!!Ahmed Tinubu's Health Worsens, Can't Recognise Close Relatives

2014-09-12-08-19-35

Close family relatives to the godfather of southwest politics have begun long prayers sessions and fasting over the deteriorating health of Alhaji Bola Tinubu – who was flown to a medical facility in London for treatment last week – following what many believe was a massive stroke.

According to a source who claims to be knowledgeable of the Tinubu family, the health of the All Progressive Congress [APC] may have been worsened by a recent discovery of cancer. The cancer, he claims, had reached advanced stage before it was diagnosed by the medical team. The recent stroke only added to the seriousness of the situation.

As learnt, Tinubu in his current state has not been able to recognize close family relatives who had come to pay him a visit. One of the source who related his experience indicated that Tinubu was exhibiting symptoms of dementia.

Will keep you updated.

I Thought Only People in Africa Had HIV- HIV Positive British Mum

2014-09-12-08-15-36

48 year old mother of three Racheal Dilly who got diagnosed with HIV in 2004 said prior to her diagnosis had thought HIV/AIDS only affected Africans because she didn't know any white person who had the illness at the time.

Addressing hosts of ITV Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, yesterday, Racheal Dilly said she got infected after she dated a man she met online and had unprotected s3x with him. She said she started falling ill once they ended their relationship and she was asked to go for HIV test after other test conducted read negative.

"I just didn't know anything about it. I just thought you got it in Africa. I didn't know a white person had ever got it". Dilly said to her amazed hosts yesterday.

Oscar Pistorius might be Found Guilty of Manslaughter

2014-09-12-07-33-43

Oscar Pistorius has been cleared of Murder Charges
but might be found guilty of Manslaughter.

Judge Masipa will begin proceedings by evaluating the evidence of each of the witnesses and she is assisted only by two assessors. She may decide that Oscar Pistorius is innocent, or that the state has not done enough to prove its case, resulting in an acquittal. But if she decides Pistorius deliberately murdered Steenkamp, he could face a life sentence, which in South Africa means 25 years in jail.

See some of the things judge Masipa said

*He was negligent

*He could have run to the balcony and screamed. He
could have called security.
*He was reckless, acted in haste and used excessive force

*He had other options but chose to use a loaded gun

*He could have run to the balcony and called for help like he did after the shooting

*He could have called for help in less time it took to shoot through the door.

*He had reasonable time to reflect and think

*There was no explanation why Oscar didn't call security before arming himself and going to the bathroom.
*If he woke and found someone over him and opened fire, that would have been excusable conduct. Continue...

*Many people suffer from crime but not everyone sleeps with a firearm under their bed

*His conduct could be explained by looking at his past. But that does not excuse his conduct.

*Growing up in crime-riddled environment with a paranoid mother is just an explaination not excuse

*Many South Africans grew up in crime-riddled environment, they don't go about killing others

*Explains that the court must use the test of the reasonable man to determine whether Oscar was negligent.

*The test for negligence: weather a reasonable person would have foreseen the reasonable possibility of the consequence.

*Defence said conduct of Oscar was brought about by several factors like lack of burglar bars on windows

The court will resume hearing at 9.30am Friday (Today)

Panic as Sick Female OAU Student Confessed to have had Contact with Doctor who died of Ebola

Fear gripped students, parents and staff of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on Tuesday over a report that a patient on admission at the OAU Health Centre was a suspected Ebola Virus Disease victim.

Though the management of the school initially denied the development but the Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Temitope Ilori, said the sick student had confessed having contact with the late Port Harcourt doctor, Iyke Enemuo, who died of the EVD after he secretly treated an infected ECOWAS diplomat, Olu-Ibukun Koye, in a hotel in the Rivers State capital.

The commissioner said the female student had been put in the isolation ward.

Ilori said, “I was told that a student of the OAU who had contact with the doctor who died of the Ebola virus in Port Harcourt walked into the health centre when she was sick.

“She was said to have told doctors at the health centre that she had contact with the Port Harcourt doctor and was put under surveillance but she said she tested negative that time.

“Now she returned to the OAU to continue with her studies and was sick. She was said to have walked to the health centre and told them everything about her contact with the doctor.

“Her blood sample has been taken for another test in Lagos and we are awaiting the result. We pray she is not positive but she has been isolated at the health centre.”

When one of our correspondents visited the hospital on Tuesday, it was observed that health officials were disinfecting the surroundings of the medical centre and more attention was paid to places where patients sit before being attended to.

It was also learnt that top officials of the hospital held an emergency meeting after testing the suspected patient, who was said to have been on admission in the hospital since Monday.

Before the confirmation by the commissioner, the Public Relations Officer of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile Ife, Mr. Olu Bello, had denied the report that a suspected Ebola virus patient had been admitted to the hospital.

Bello said he also heard that a student of the OAU, who returned from Port Harcourt, was down with the virus but he said the hospital did not have any case of Ebola.

“There is no case of Ebola at the OAUTHC. Nothing like that; I also heard something like that but such rumour has been causing unnecessary tension among the people but it is not true.”

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju,   said the university would make its findings known to the public later Tuesday night.

“It is a suspicion; we don’t know yet. We will make our position on it known tonight. We are still working; we are in the office now,” he told one of our correspondents on the phone.

Olanrewaju later told The Punch that the ailing student had been moved to Lagos.

Though, medical officials in the hospital had denied that the said student tested positive to the Ebola virus, they confirmed that the Federal Government Emergency Ebola Team had been contacted.

One of the officials, who preferred not to be identified because he was not authorised to speak, said the suspected patient would be made to go through an intensive examination on Wednesday (today) by the EVD team from Lagos.

Another official claimed that the symptoms showed by the student “are not too different from fever”.

The official said, “A patient was brought to the health centre and due to the fact that she hails from Port Harcourt there were fears that it might be Ebola. We have carried out tests on the victim and found that she is suffering from a likely fever. Not satisfied, we pressed further by holding an emergency meeting which finished five minutes ago.”

When asked why the hospital was disinfecting its surroundings, another staff said, “We are only taking preventive measures. To be 100 per cent satisfied, we have sent a letter to the Ebola Emergency Team in Lagos and the team should arrive by tomorrow (today).”

To ensure calmness in the institution, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bamitale Omole, urged students to desist from spreading rumours about EVD.

He spoke during the 52nd matriculation ceremony for 5,608 newly-admitted students of OAU on Tuesday.

He said, “A current issue of concern to us as an institution, which is also related to the judicious use of the facilities in the halls of residence, is maintaining a high standard of personal hygiene to halt the spread of EVD. The virus, which is not airborne, spreads through bodily fluids such as blood, sweat, urine, saliva and vomit. We should all co-operate to halt the spread of this disease by arming ourselves with adequate information about the disease and avoid spreading false rumours that certainly can cause fear and panic.

“A committee of experts had been set up in the university and it will step up its sensitisation and enlightenment campaign about the symptoms, modes of transmission and preventive measures of the disease.”

How a Soldier Raped me for 5hours under a tree- Poly Student

2014-09-09-08-15-25
A 23-year-old National Diploma, ND, student of Mass Communication Department, Ibarapa Polytechnic, yesterday, narrated how she was raped under a tree by one of the security men attached to Operation Burst set up by Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State to check criminality in the state.

The incident was said to have happened in Eruwa from 10.30 pm on August 29 this year while she was returning after seeing off a friend.
She said she was raped repeatedly for five hours before she was let off the hook by the rapist soldier.
How it happened

According to her, the soldier allegedly ordered her to climb the motorcycle while threatening to stab her with a knife.
She said: “It happened on Friday, August 29, 2014. I was coming back to my room after seeing off a friend. He accused me of being a cultist for moving about around that time, but I denied it. He then ordered me to climb his motorcycle, but I pleaded with him that he should let me go.

“He removed a knife and said that he would stab me if I refused to obey him. So scared, I climbed the Okada and he took me to the Operation Burst office in Eruwa.
“When we got there, he forcefully led me to a dark area under a tree and ordered me to remove my dress to enable him see if I had tattoos on my body.
“I told him I did not have tattoos and that he should let me go. He then removed the knife again and said that he would slaughter me like a ram if I failed to ‘cooperate’ and that I would be buried like many other girls who had failed to cooperate in the past, and nobody would trace my death to him.
“Sensing danger, I removed my clothes. He ordered me to lie down under the tree and had sex with me several times while I was crying.

“He raped me till 3.30 am and I complained of catching cold. He entered into the office and brought out a bottle of beer. He gave it to me to hold for him.
“Later he said he was going to bring a blanket for me to cover my body. I waited for about 30 minutes, but when he did not return, I dressed up and ran away.”
Case reported at Police station

The victim’s counsel, Mr. Adeosun, confirmed her story, saying: “In the morning of Saturday, August 30, 2014, the victim called her parents on the telephone and told them what happened. It was the parents that came to brief our office. We thereafter advised that the victim should report to the Police Station at Eruwa, which she did.”

When the matter was reported to the security outfit, the girl identified the rapist among other security operatives paraded before her.
To worsen her ordeal, the Eruwa General Hospital where she went for test did not help matter.
According to her, on arrival in the hospital, the doctor she met told her to buy hand gloves which she did.
She said: “The doctor told me to lie down and use his phone torchlight to examine my private part and wrote a report that although there was no trace of semen, the private part had been tampered with.”
It was gathered that the doctor claimed he could not carry out test on the inner part of the vagina because the hospital did not have the facilities to carry out such test.

The victim’s lawyer said a soldier called him at 8.25 pm on Sunday informing him that the Army had commenced court martial trial on the indicted soldier, but that the student must appear to testify.
Suspect recommended for disciplinary measure
Responding, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dr. Festus Adedayo, quoted the security outfit as saying it had recommended the suspect for disciplinary measure for abandoning his duty post.
In a statement issued by the outfit’s Second in Command, CSP Elijah Bawa, “immediately the outfit was informed of the allegation of rape against the said soldier, he dispatched an investigation team to Eruwa.

“The team met with the Divisional Police Officer for the Eruwa Division, DSP Kayode Adigun who disclosed that the 23-year old Mass Communication student of the school lodged a complaint with the command that she had been raped by the soldier who was also an operative of the anti-crime outfit.
“The outfit’s Second in Command and the DPO took the complainant to the Eruwa General Hospital for medical examination, the result of which they said proved negative.
“The soldier will, however, be charged for abandoning his duty post in the night without permission against standing instructions in the Operation Burst’s code of conduct,” he said.

Doctors Dissapprove Sept 22nd School Resumption Date

The   Nigerian Medical Association on Monday faulted the Federal Government’s directive to schools to resume on September 22 as against October 12.

It said through its National Secretary-General, Dr. Olawunmi Alayaki, that all schools ought to remain   shut   till all those under surveillance for the Ebola Virus Disease in the country had been certified free.

“We are not happy with this decision on the resumption of schools. Schools should be shut till the last suspected case or patient is certified free of the virus,” the NMA said.

Before the association made this known the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker, had disclosed that an 18 month-old baby had been quarantined in the state for   showing symptoms of the deadly virus.

The NMA suggested that the resumption of schools could be shifted till December or early part of next year because if Ebola should spread to any school, it would “assume another dimension.”

It said, “ We can shift the resumption date till next year or in the next three months if that is the time it will take. Government should have enough time to follow the standard procedure for containing   the virus.

“Parents have no reason to be   in a hurry because if Ebola should enter any school, it will assume another dimension. Children cannot survive isolation like adults.

“Nigeria is peculiar because of her large population and we should be pragmatic and proactive. It   will not augur well for the country if we have another outbreak due to carelessness.”

Also, the Lagos State chapter of NMA said that the Federal Government should have postponed the resumption date till the completion of surveillance and monitoring of contacts in the affected states.

It said through its chairman, Dr. Tope Ojo, that   many of the public and private schools in the country lacked basic   hygiene and sanitary facilities that could help prevent the spread of the EVD by pupils.

It stated, “It would not have cost the Federal Government anything to have waited till those under surveillance have completed the 21 days in all the states where they are being monitored.

“The government knows that it takes a longer time for children to get used to the idea of hygiene and sanitation. They are even more vulnerable because they would play with each other whether they are sick or not.

“How many children know that they should use hand sanitisers or avoid contact with anybody that has fever?

“Waiting till October when at least the situations in Rivers and Lagos states would have been conclusively managed is another safety measure the government should have taken . These kids are not studying to get a degree, so we are sure it would not have affected schools’ curricula.”

Also the immediate president of the NMA, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, expressed concern about the September 22 resumption date, wondered about the safety parameters government used in fixing the date.

Enabulele said that   the grouse of many parents with the   resumption date stemmed from the fact that they were not convinced that schools had met the safety standards for the prevention of Ebola.

He added that if the government was bent on schools adhering to the date, it should begin now to check the sanitary facilities put in place by their proprietors to ensure the safety of pupils.

Enabulele said, “We must know the parameters that the Federal Government used to arrive at the resumption date in the first place. Has the Federal Government carried out a safety assessment in registered schools in the country? There should be a checklist and only those who meet it should be certified fit to reopen.

“The minimum standard is that all schools should have a dispensary, a sick bay where sick children, especially those with fever, are properly managed and tested.”

Saying that he knew that such facilities were not available in many schools, he asked: So, why the rush for their resumption?”

Also, a consultant paediatrician with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi- Araba, Prof. Edamisan Temiye, called on the three tiers of government to ensure that schools  had access to water on their premises.

The former Lagos NMA chairman, also warned parents not to force sick children to go to school as this could expose them to infections.

Temiye said, “Governments must ensure that clean water   flows on schools’ premises so that children can wash their hands regularly. Water is important for sanitation and it is the duty of government to ensure that citizens have access to it.

“Also, parents should take sick children to hospital. Don’t give them drugs and force them to go to school. Ebola can only be caught from a sick person. School authorities should watch out for   and isolate sick children   from others.

“Again school owners should give hand sanitisers to their pupils before allowing them into their premises. They should also have thermal thermometers to check the temperatures of their pupils before allowing them into their school premises.”

The Minister of Health had before the doctors spoke with one of our correspondents in Lagos, said that there was nothing to fear over the directive to schools to resume on September 22.

Chukwu, who gave an update of EVD in Nigeria, said, “We have contained the situation. Ebola is no longer in the streets anywhere in Nigeria.

“We are working with the Federal Ministry of Education and we made it clear that in institutions having students returning from outside Nigeria, they should let us know.

“We will work with them and we have questionnaires which we are already using on airlines and ships coming into Nigeria as well as other means of transport. They will fill questionnaires. We will ask questions and conduct tests to see that they don’t have fever.”

The minister also revealed that a fiancĂ© of one of Patrick Sawyer’s contacts who was confirmed positive for EVD had since recovered.

He added, “So far, all the cases that have been confirmed in Nigeria are traceable to the index case (Sawyer). As of this (Monday) morning, the total number of confirmed cases of EVD in Nigeria is 19.   Fifteen were   in Lagos and four   in Port Harcourt.

“The 19th case is the fiancĂ© of one of the primary contacts of Mr. Sawyer who died of the disease. The test results were equivocal but further tests established the disease. He had only mild symptoms and he has since recovered from the illness. He was quarantined but because of the equivocal test result he was not placed on active treatment.

“The total number of deaths from EVD in Nigeria stands at seven . Five   of them died in Lagos, one in a private hospital, the index case,   and the other four   in the isolation ward in Lagos State.

“Two of the seven died in Port Harcourt, the medical doctor who died in a private hospital and the contact, a patient in the hospital at the time the doctor was also on admission, who died in the isolation ward in Rivers State.”

According to him, the total number of patients who have been successfully managed and discharged stands at nine.

He added that the latest was the sister (Chinyere) of the late Port Harcourt doctor who was discharged from the isolation ward in Rivers State on Sunday.

“It should be noted that the nine   patients successfully managed and discharged are among the total number of 11 survivors of EVD in Nigeria. At the moment, only one person, the wife of the late Port Harcourt doctor, is on treatment at the isolation ward in Lagos.

“She no longer has any symptoms and is undergoing a series of tests preparatory to her discharge from the isolation ward this week.

“Regarding contacts currently under surveillance, Lagos has 27 contacts surveillance as of now. A total of 339 contacts who were previously on surveillance have been discharged having completed the 21 days of observation. Port Harcourt has 477 contacts under surveillance. It is a mixed group consisting of tertiary and quaternary contacts of   Sawyer. Five contacts have already been discharged from surveillance in Port Harcourt having completed the 21 days of observation.”

In Port Harcourt, the Health commissioner, Parker, also confirmed that Chinyere had been discharged. But as journalists expressed joy over Chinyere’s recovery, he announced that an 18 month-old baby, who showed symptoms of Ebola had been quarantined for observation.

The commissioner however did not provide further information as he returned to Chinyere’s recovery and discharge.

“I am cheerful today because we have successfully treated an Ebola patient. She (Chinyere) has been effectively treated, cleared and discharged from our isolation treatment centre. She deserves to be celebrated as a success story,” he said.

Parker, who explained that   the state government had reached about 479 contacts, said, “I can assure you that the disease has been covered. People should not cause panic. The number of deaths from Ebola is lower than deaths from road accidents.”

Meet the woman who has slept with 140 Men and also kept a diary rating each one of them

An Irish mother who has kept a diary detailing her sexual history with 140 men has said she could make room in her 'little black book' for Eamonn Holmes.

Sandy Nardo, 53, from Dublin, made the proposition as she was interviewed by the TV presenter and his wife, Ruth Langsford, on today's This Morning.

Speaking of how she has racked up so many lovers over the years, Sandy said: 'I was kind of looking for a husband but it's hard to get the qualities you want in one guy.'

She added to Ruth: 'You've done alright. I might be able to make a little space sometime if you ever get tried of him.'

An awkward-looking Eamonn quickly changed the subject to the viewers' comments while an unflappable Ruth asked Sandy if she had 'commitment issues'.

Sandy said she has had so many lovers because she 'likes collecting things' and keeping a diary of her conquests became a ritual.

'I like to keep lists of things, it's a habit. It might be a bit of OCD,' she admitted.

She explained how she slept with 140 men around the world - often just one night stands - as she travelled with her job as a translator.

She started a list where she would rank them on their looks, dress sense and 'emotional state'.

She would also keep a record of their 'solvency' (i.e how well-off they are) and how long the relationship lasted.

Court Orders Closure of 20 accounts belonging to Dangote

2014-09-05-08-44-51

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered 20 commercial banks in Nigeria to dishonour all withdrawal cheques from Mr. Sani Dangote, younger brother to Alhaji Aliko Dangote, and his companies, Dansa Foods Limited and Bulk Pack Services Limited.

Justice Okon Abang, who made the order on Thursday in a bench ruling, said the order would subsist till September 11, 2014, when the court would entertain
all applications in a suit brought by Union Bank Plc against Dangote and his companies.

The judge also ordered all the banks involved to, within five days of the interim order, file affidavits declaring the defendants statement of accounts with them.

Union Bank had taken Dangote and his companies to court over alleged refusal to liquidate about N5.2bn loan granted them since September, 2008.

The bank, through its lawyer, Mr. Chukwudi Enebeli from the chambers of Mr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), had instituted suits seeking an order of mareva injunction to restrain all the defendants’ bankers in Nigeria from allowing them withdraw funds from their accounts pending the determination of the suits.

The banks named include Access, CITI, Diamond, Ecobank, Enterprise, Fidelity, Keystone, Mainstreet, Skye, Wema, Heritage, Sterling, Unity and Zenith banks.

Others are First Bank, First City Monument Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Stanbic IBTC, Standard Chartered Bank and United Bank for Africa.

In the affidavit in support of its suits, Union Bank Plc urged the court to urgently grant the mareva order because in a bid to evade payment of the loan, Dangote had been making frantic efforts to deplete the funds in the accounts of his companies, and that the bank’s investigations revealed that the defendants had started diverting the funds to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Canada and Switzerland.

One Olufunmilola Ayoola, an official of the bank, who deposed to the bank’s affidavit, alleged that the failure of the defendants to liquidate the monumental debt had negatively affected the Nigerian economy, a development which the bank claimed necessitated the suit.

According to Ayoola, Union Bank Plc has been having difficulty in extending credit facilities to small scale businesses, which in turn would have helped in boosting the nation’s economy and salvage the country from its present malaise of corruption and underdevelopment crisis.

The bank stated that the funds, which Dangote and his companies failed to pay, were capable of going a long way in impacting positively on the nation’s economy.

When the matter came up for hearing on Thursday, the motion could not be heard as counsel for the defendants informed the court that they had filed objections challenging jurisdiction of the court to entertain the suit.

Out of all the banks, Diamond and Zenith appeared before the court on Thursday and explained that Dangote was equally indebted to them.

Zenith Bank specifically said Dangote was indebted to the bank to the tune of €7m.

In view of the defendants’ objections contesting jurisdiction, the judge said the matter would be adjourned till September 11, 2014, to be able to take all the applications.

The judge added, however, that there was an urgent need to preserve the res in view of the allegation that the defendants were about to move the funds abroad.

He said, “In line with Order 28 Rule 2 of the rules of this court, an interim order is hereby made restraining the banks from allowing the defendants to operate their accounts with them, especially honouring withdrawal of funds.

“I think the dictate of justice demands that a preserving order should be made to preserve the res (subject matter) of this suit.”

Abang, however, ordered Union Bank to file an undertaking that it would indemnify the defendants in the event that the freezing order ought not to have been made.

We always Pray to God For Protection before we go on Operation- Suspected Robbers

2014-09-04-12-04-59

Four members of a robbery gang who were arrested by the Lagos State Police Command have said they usually prayed to God before any operation.

One of the suspected robbers, Mutalubi Abdullahi, explained that the prayer was to ensure that only ‘sinners’ would be dealt with by the gang, while the ‘innocent’ would be spared.

Abdullahi, who was arrested along with Ismaila Moruf, Opeyemi Akinyemi and Sarah Emmanuel, were arrested by the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command, for robbing early morning pedestrians and motorists in the Mile 2 area of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the gang, which operated on commercial motorcycles otherwise called okada, made use of three locally-made guns in their operations.

According to the police, the female member of the gang, Emmanuel, allegedly supplied two of the three guns. It was gathered that two of the guns had, however, been recovered by the police.

The police said the suspected robbers, who were arrested from their respective hideouts in Iyana Iyesi, Sango Ota, Ogun State, also operated in the Agege, Isolo and Oshodi areas.

It was gathered that the mode of operation of the gang was to attack unsuspecting motorists and pedestrians on the expressway early in the morning and during traffic hitches.

But 29-year-old Abdullahi from Igbeti, Oyo State, said he and other members of the gang were driven into robbery by poverty. He said they were careful to rob only those who deserved to be robbed.

He said, “That is why we usually prayed to God before embarking on any operation. The prayer was for God to protect us and to bring only sinners our way so that those who were innocent would be spared.

“I was formerly working as a panel beater in Oyingbo, Lagos State. I started robbing just last year. I have gone on robbery operations about 10 times.

“The gang has three guns. We only use the guns to frighten people. Mile 2 Expressway, Alapere and Oshodi are areas where we operated. The money I made from panel beating and okada riding was not sufficient. That was why I took to robbery.”

Thirty-year-old Akinyemi, who was also an okada rider before joining the gang, said he made about N25,000 from each robbery operation.

He said, “I was an okada rider, but when I had an accident with the okada, I stopped the business. I made about N25,000 each from about four operations I went with the gang. Our style was to attack people in traffic jams. My wife did not know I was a member of a robbery gang. It is true that we prayed before our operations, asking for protection as we went out.”

Moruf, 30, from Epe, Lagos, said he was lured into the gang after his job as a roadside mechanic did not bring sufficient income.

The only female in the gang, 31-year-old Emmanuel, who allegedly supplied them with guns, said her friend, Modinat, convinced her to buy the guns for the gang.

She added that apart from getting guns for the gang, she had not gone for any operation.

She said, “I was working as a hairdresser. It was one of my friends, Modinat, who called me and said the gang needed a gun. Modinat was a girlfriend to one of them. She then asked me to come with her and I did. We got the two guns for N25,000 at Idi Iroko from some mechanics. That was in February. I know I am guilty.”

Our correspondent learnt that the gang was arrested, after several complaints had reached the former commissioner of police, AIG Umar Manko, about robberies in the area.

It was gathered that Manko had then directed SARS Commander, SP Abba Kyari, to go after the robbers.

A police source at the command said investigations into the matter were ongoing.

After first Failed Marriage, Funke Akindele is Making Secret Marriage Plans to UK based Lover

2014-09-03-07-18-32

This is according to City People.

Talented screen diva Funke Akindele is finally set to give marriage another chance and this is authoritative. The pretty actress, who recently marked her birthday, is now engaged to wed and has concluded plans to have a secret introduction ceremony with her UK-based boo next month, although she is keeping the details under wraps.  According to what City People gathered from a reliable source, Funke who has been in a blossoming romantic affair with her new heartthrob for quite some time now, has finally accepted his proposal to take the union to the next level. She decided to keep it a top secret considering her first bitter experience with her much-publicized celebrity marriage that packed up few months after.

Sources reveal the handsome dude who lives in the United Kingdom is head over heels with Funke and shows her a lot of affection. However, she has currently moved into a new mini duplex located in the highbrow China Estate, inside Chevron Drive Lekki. Recall that this magazine exclusively broke the news about Funke’s new romance and her new apartment in Lekki. Although the actress came out to debunk the story that she has a new lover in her life who has been pampering her silly, she however acknowledged that she has indeed moved into a new Lekki home. Reason not far-fetched from the fact that she has decided to keep her relationship very private. The couple we gathered started their romance shortly after she left her first marriage and the guy whom people close to Funke confirm is very crazy about her, is quite eager to walk her down the aisle but Funke who has been bitten once aint taking any chances.
